As the government shutdown festers like an open wound, some demand an end to the filibuster rule in the Senate. This would free the upper chamber to approve proposals on a simple majority, theoretically creating a clear path toward reopening Washington.
Not so fast, warns Gun Owners of America (GOA).
The Second Amendment advocacy group strongly cautioned against what it believes would be a rash decision. In no uncertain terms, GOA Senior Vice President Erich Pratt described the dangers of such a move.
A quick and temporary solution would create a permanent catastrophe
“President Donald Trump is calling on the Senate to use the ‘nuclear option’ and eliminate the filibuster to reopen the government,” Pratt explained in an alert. “Destroying the filibuster would be a disaster for the Second Amendment. The truth is, the filibuster is the critical tool that GOA has used for years to defeat mandatory gun registration, bans on common firearms, crushing restrictions on gun shows, national gun confiscation laws, and countless other gun-grabbing schemes.”
Any lawmaker who opposes the filibuster must realize that Congress’s current makeup will change, and it very easily could become a majority of anti-gunners.
In this situation, a future president opposed to gun rights would be able to run roughshod over the Second Amendment.
A future Congress with a compliant president could easily eradicate gun rights
Pratt detailed this by adding the results that would be guaranteed if this final protection is ‘nuked.’
“If the filibuster fails, no matter who demands it, the gun control crowd in Congress will ram every radical gun control bill into law,” Pratt declared. “That’s why your action is absolutely critical, right now. I need you to send a message to your senators today. Tell them: Protect the filibuster and don’t give up the ONE tool that’s topped gun control for decades! Enshrine the filibuster into law.”
