The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has a new deputy director as the long-overdue overhaul of the embattled agency continues.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) celebrated the appointment of Robert Cekada as the ATF’s new deputy director, noting his more than three decades of experience in law enforcement.
Prior to his appointment, Cekada was the Executive Assistant Director of Operations for the ATF since September 2022. He oversaw the agency’s Office of Regulatory Operations, Office of Field Operations, and the Office of Intelligence Operations.
Cekada’s long ATF career began in 2005 when he became a special agent with the Baltimore Field Division. Before joining the agency, Cekada was a part of the New York Police Department, working to combat criminal gang activity.
He was also a member of the Patrol Division and the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team with the City of Plantation Police Department in Broward County, Florida.
The firearms industry trade association lauded the appointment of a seasoned veteran with 20 years of upstanding work in the agency.
NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane believes Cekada will foster a more professional relationship with the Second Amendment-protected industry.
“Deputy Director Cekada has the experience, wisdom, and respect of his colleagues to effectively lead the men and women of the ATF,” Keane declared. “Deputy Director Cekada respects the Second Amendment and understands that the firearm industry is not the ‘enemy’ but [a] valuable partner that assists ATF in its core mission of combatting violent crime.”
Keane added that these entrepreneurs are on the front lines of preventing violent criminals from gaining access to weapons. They should always have been a highly valued resource for federal officials to utilize in battling “illegal straw purchasing of firearms.”
Cekada is noted for having worked steadfastly with the weapons industry to ensure that only law-abiding citizens have access to firearms.
