A Montana man is thankful to be alive today after a frightening confrontation last week, and this time the incident did not involve a violent criminal bent on destruction.
Instead, it was a charging grizzly bear.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) investigated the encounter that unfolded on Friday near Dupuyer, a popular spot for shed hunting and grizzlies. The site is located some 70 miles south of the Canadian border and is well known for its deer and elk populations—as well as bears.
The man is believed to have been looking for antlers in the dense brush when he stumbled onto a disturbing scene. Spotting the adult grizzly, he wisely attempted to leave quietly, but that attempt failed.
Instead, the bear suddenly charged, and he had precious little time to respond. The hunter fired one shot, which killed the grizzly.
Officials described the dead animal as a 13-year-old female weighing about 250 pounds. There were no prior reports of the animal having any dangerous contact with humans.
A yearling cub was found nearby, suggesting that the adult grizzly was defending its young. A yearling is a young bear older than one year.
The small grizzly was not harmed, and investigators left it alone.
Shed hunting is a time-honored pastime in Montana, and in the rugged terrain where this incident occurred, it is wise to be on the lookout for grizzly bears. Their populations are increasing across the state, though the bears remain listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
There are an estimated 1,900 grizzly bears across the continental United States. FWP officials warned that the growing Montana population means that there is an increased “likelihood that residents and recreationists will encounter them in more places each year.”
The death of the wild animal is tragic, but having a firearm likely saved the hunter’s life.
