A Butts County father with his wife and three children at home is thankful for the Second Amendment as he successfully thwarted a suspected home invasion. The frightening incident last week underscored the need for preparedness and the importance of having a legal firearm ready.
According to authorities, Justin Couch and his wife, Allison, were alerted at around 11:30 p.m. to the intruder’s presence by one of their sons.
The dad went to investigate and found a strange man attempting to gain entry through a bedroom window. The suspect was later identified as an unfamiliar neighbor, Abdul Aquill.
After retreating from the son’s bedroom window, Aquil allegedly broke a second window as Couch secured a firearm to defend his family with. The suspect reportedly continued to try to enter through the glass and was able to get partially inside.
Couch told local media, “The guy was in my house, one leg in. I just fired one shot.
The Butts County Sheriff’s Office reported that Aquil shouted threats at the family that he would kill them. He fled after the warning shot was fired but was quickly apprehended in a nearby cul-de-sac by responding officers.
Officials said the suspect fought back against being taken into custody before several deputies and a taser subdued him.
Aquill at last report remains in the Butts County Jail charged with burglary, home invasion, terroristic threats, three counts of first-degree cruelty to children, second-degree criminal damage to property, and obstruction of law enforcement.
Sheriff Gary Long heaped praise on the quick-acting homeowner. “If Justin had not had a firearm—had he not fired that weapon—I can assure you, if somebody was not murdered in that house, it would have been very close to it.”
The attempted intrusion understandably shook the family, but there were no injuries thanks to the presence of a weapon and the courage to use it. Without the Second Amendment, the night quite likely would have had a tragic ending.
