Gun rights advocates cautiously celebrated the recent announcement by Attorney General Pam Bondi of the creation of the Second Amendment Enforcement Task Force.
After all, promises made and promises kept often are not the same in Washington, D.C.
But there was an air of expectation surrounding the event. Bondi noted that, “For too long, the Second Amendment, which establishes the fundamental individual right of Americans to keep and bear arms, has been treated as a second-class right.”
Bondi sent a memorandum to all Department of Justice employees reminding them of the challenges of undoing previous agency actions that harmed gun rights.
She wrote, “The prior administration placed an undue burden on gun owners and vendors by targeting law-abiding citizens exercising their Second Amendment rights.”
One of the first actions after the announcement was the appointment of Harmeet K. Dhillon as the Assistant Attorney General for the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division. She will play a significant role in the new task force’s efforts to secure gun rights for all law-abiding citizens.
She immediately sent a shot across the bow that hopefully signaled her commitment to the Second Amendment.
Dhillon declared on X, “Jurisdictions that openly flout Supreme Court precedent and the Constitution with respect to our right to bear arms, watch out. You won’t get away with it.”
Now it’s time to see impressive words roll into action. The DOJ has ample opportunity to weigh in on cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and in the federal judicial system that affect gun rights.
Second Amendment advocates must be pleased by this new direction in the federal government. With due diligence and hard work, fundamental rights that were eroded in previous years by misguided leaders may yet be restored.
