Colorado legislators who support Second Amendment rights are appalled at the state’s recent enactment of a sweeping package of gun control laws, and they are asking for federal intervention.

While the law doesn’t take effect until August 2026, gun enthusiasts are already working to head it off at the pass.

Signed by Gov. Jared Polis (D) earlier this month, the law will erect tall barriers between law-abiding citizens and purchasing Modern Sporting Rifles and other popular weapons.

Senate Bill 3 prohibits the purchase, sale, and manufacture of a broad array of common weapons, including semi-automatic rifles, shotguns, pistols, and specific semi-automatic handguns that feature detachable magazines.

Among other regulations, potential buyers must seek permission from their local sheriff and a permit to purchase these weapons. There is also a requirement for 12 hours of safety training.

A group of state House members sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi on Wednesday asking for federal intercession. She recently announced the Second Amendment Enforcement Task Force, which, on the surface, appears designed to do precisely what Colorado lawmakers want.

Stop state and local governments from blatant infringements on gun rights.

State Rep. Ryan Armagost (R) told journalists at a news conference announcing the letter that lawmakers had no choice but to seek help from the national level. “When state leaders ignore constitutional concerns and refuse to even allow a resolution requesting judicial review, federal oversight becomes not only appropriate, but absolutely necessary.”

The legislators declared the pending law unconstitutional, stating that it created an “emergency” situation for the state. They asked that the federal government, through Bondi’s agency, intervene “to aid our efforts in challenging the constitutionality” of Senate Bill 3.

If there is bite to go along with the bark of the new Department of Justice task force, there may be good news coming for Colorado gun owners. Stay tuned.
