Law-abiding Oregon gun owners are increasingly in the crosshairs of anti-gun zealots who pile one infringement on top of another to slowly eradicate the Second Amendment.
A prominent state gun rights group, the Oregon Firearms Federation (OFF), warned this week that a new bill threatens to undermine basic freedoms in the Beaver State further.
SB 243 is just the latest in a long procession of obstacles Oregonians face to exercise their right to keep and bear arms. It would impose a waiting period on top of the one residents already must endure, prohibit “rapid fire activators,” and substantially increase the number of no-go zones where good citizens cannot defend themselves with their lawful firearms.
The controversial proposal has yet to encounter a speed bump in the Oregon legislature, and all indications are that it may be well on its way to becoming law.
The OFF correctly slammed SB 243 as “pure harassment” by elected officials on the very people they should be bent on protecting.
Oregon’s controversial Measure 114 passed in 2022 with only the state’s handful of densely populated areas supporting it. The sporting community, which makes up the vast majority of the land mass, came out in droves against the bill.
That was not enough, and the successful initiative now mandates lengthy background checks and permitting systems for potential gun owners.
These citizens would also be subjected to a ban on a wide range of firearm accessories that are common among the shooting public. Competition triggers, for example, would no longer be legal to install on a weapon.
And Oregonians would have to navigate an even more expansive array of so-called “sensitive spaces” that would be “gun-free” zones. This designation, of course, has no bearing on violent criminals who do not recognize such restrictions.
Instead, it would disarm law-abiding citizens and strip them of their constitutional right to self-defense.
