Restraining orders are often only as strong as the paper they are printed on. In many unfortunate situations, it is up to the victim to be their own protector and first responder, and that’s precisely the course charted by a courageous Tennessee woman.
She learned the hard way Monday evening that her order of protection against her ex-boyfriend was worthless when he attempted to force entry into her home.
Metro Nashville officers received a call around 6:14 p.m. from a neighbor who said they saw the intended victim shoot her attacker.
Officials quickly learned that the embattled woman had an order of protection against her ex. This did nothing to thwart his attempts to reenter her life and residence, but a loaded weapon did.
Law enforcement found the unidentified man on the woman’s porch suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. He was transported to an area hospital for minor and non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into custody.
The intended victim reportedly fled the scene before officers arrived.
There are outstanding warrants for the suspect, and he faces a heap of trouble when he is released from medical care.
As for the woman, investigators are probing her claim of self-defense. If the facts remain as initially presented, there is little doubt that she will be in the clear.
Though his intentions are unknown, the violent attempt to break into his ex-girlfriend’s dwelling signaled a clear and present danger. The outcome of Monday’s frightening encounter may have been infinitely worse if she had not been armed and prepared.
Protective orders have their place, and if respected, they can stop threatening behavior. Unfortunately, if they are not adhered to, these acts are worth less than the ink and paper they are written on.
