There is something about the elderly that makes any violent attack on these treasured citizens particularly heinous. They have lived long lives and deserve peace and tranquility in their twilight years, and most are thought to be unable to defend themselves against predators.
Of course, free exercise of Second Amendment rights may change that scenario in a hurry.
That was the case Sunday morning in Florida when an elderly couple reportedly found themselves under assault by a 35-year-old man. Escambia County authorities believe that Daniel Sonier attacked the husband and wife, only to get the business end of a firearm.
The suspect was apparently known to the couple before the incident, and with officials determining the incident involved domestic violence, there may be a familial connection. Either way, nothing excuses harming the elderly in any situation.
One of the residents retrieved a gun and fired a shot at Sonier. Responding officers found him suffering from a bullet wound, and he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The suspect was remotely booked on domestic violence charges and battery on an elderly person. At last report, he is being held in the Escambia County jail without bond.
Under Florida law, citizens are well within their rights to deploy lethal force when facing a violent threat within their homes. There is no legal duty to retreat from a suspect, and it is shameful that this requirement exists anywhere in a nation protected by the Second Amendment.
With this in mind, officials quickly deemed the shooting to be an act of self-defense.
And while the elderly should always be a protected class, possession of a weapon and the knowledge and courage to use it can be lifesaving.
Violent criminals do not see the crime against humanity in targeting senior citizens, but only the opportunity to prey on those they believe are weak. A loaded gun can change that reality in a hurry, as it did in Florida.
