The wisdom of the straightforward and targeted approach to solving violent crime is lost on many lawmakers. Instead of going after the actual perpetrators, they foolishly attempt to stifle the Second Amendment rights of good citizens.
That is the only logical explanation for New York state Sen. Kevin Parker’s (D) misguided proposal. The legislator wants to require Empire State gun owners to pay at least a million dollars in liability insurance merely for exercising their fundamental right to keep and bear arms.
What possible effect could this have on violent crime?
None. But, according to the bill, justice will be served by enabling compensation of victims of “gun-related accidents.”
Never mind that they already have legal recourse for injuries caused by accidents or wrongdoing. Now, all gun owners would face yet another mandate designed to chip away at their constitutional rights.
At best, the proposal is political grandstanding that will wither on the vine. However, it is easy to see how it is designed to discourage the people from freely exercising this fundamental liberty.
The good news for civil rights advocates is that Parker’s measure is just the latest in a series of attempts to enact such a law in New York that has gone nowhere.
The impressive roster of failures includes 2013-14, 2015-16, 2017-18, 2019-2020, 2021-2022, and 2023-2024.
Of course, with the state government in the grasp of gun control extremist Gov. Kathy Hochul (D), past performance is no guarantee that the bill might not slip through and become law.
The East Coast bill has a shining example to look to on the opposite end of the country. The California city of San Jose implemented exactly such an insurance mandate in 2022, and though it survived initial legal challenges, gun rights groups continue to fight this latest infringement.
