School systems increasingly turn to AI gun detection programs. Like it or not, artificial intelligence is here to stay. Among the seemingly endless ways it is suddenly being utilized in the U.S. is to keep guns out of unauthorized hands in schools.
A major school system in Volusia County, Florida, is just the latest to use emerging technology to keep hallways safe.
School officials touted the added layer of safety the AI system provides
Officials in March agreed to a three-year contract with ZeroEyes Inc. The Pennsylvania-based tech firm, for $150,000, promised to commandeer already existing cameras at the system’s dozens of campuses and use them to detect illegal weapons.
Volusia County School Superintendent Carmen Balgobin told reporters that her district strives to be a “trailblazer” in school safety.
“We conducted a thorough evaluation of the technology,” Balgobin explained in a ZeroEyes news release. “We began piloting it in a few of our schools and quickly recognized the critical value it provides. We want our students to focus on learning, building friendships, and preparing for their futures, rather than worrying about their safety.”
Gun-detecting AI programs are gaining in popularity
The cutting-edge technology does something no school system could manage—it puts “eyes” everywhere 24/7. According to ZeroEyes Senior Vice President of Sales J.T. Wilkins, the AI program asks every minute of the day or night, “Is there something that appears to be a firearm that appears to be in the frame of this image?”
And the bandwagon of systems turning to AI for gun detection is growing exponentially.
Volusia County is one of roughly ten districts in the Sunshine State that relies on cameras and algorithms for security, and this or similar software is now deployed in 43 states.
While keeping weapons out of the wrong hands is certainly a noble goal, significant constitutional and privacy concerns must be considered when deploying such programs.
