Imagine being at work and looking outside to see a stranger attempting to steal your vehicle. Do you immediately call the authorities or run out and confront the bad guy?
For a Washington state concealed carry permit holder, the choice was door number two. It is a good thing that he had his loaded firearm ready as the situation that erupted in Redmond quickly escalated.
An alleged car thief made a poor choice when confronted by the armed owner
When confronted with an armed civilian, car thieves should be expected to back down and maybe even attempt to escape. This bad guy had other ideas, and that could have cost him his life.
The armed man told investigators that, rather than assess the odds and rethink his course of action, the suspect became aggressive and moved toward him.
That was a bad call, and the employee quickly fired a round in self-defense. The alleged thief went straight down with a bullet wound to the abdomen, and the frightening confrontation was over.
Despite recent anti-gun actions, Washington law still favors armed civilians in clear self-defense situations
The suspect was rushed to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of what was not described as a life-threatening injury.
The man who defended his life and property remained on the scene and explained to first responders that he fired because of a clear and present threat. Only one round was discharged, and no other injuries were reported.
The good news for the shooter is that Washington citizens have “Stand Your Ground” rights and are not expected to turn tail and run at the first hint of danger. The grey area is whether the employee felt threatened with serious bodily harm or death, and he apparently and rightly did.
Even with Second Amendment protections, armed civilians must be well aware of their state’s laws regarding potentially lethal self-defense.
