No one is more dedicated to promoting firearm safety than the gun industry, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) puts this mission into action.

The industry trade association partnered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to continue this effort in Miami-Dade County.

The campaign is “Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” and targets straw gun purchases and other ways those who are prohibited from possessing firearms attempt to work around the law.

The firearm industry is at the forefront of gun safety efforts

NSSF President and CEO Joe Bartozzi emphasized the powerful role the weapons industry plays in halting illegal gun sales.

“The firearm industry has always been fully committed to keeping firearms out of the hands of those who should not possess them,” Bartozzi explained. “In its twenty-fifth year, we are especially proud to launch this Don’t Lie for the Other Guy public awareness campaign in Miami as part of our cooperative friendship with the ATF, the DOJ, and the entire law enforcement community to assist them in their efforts to reduce criminal acquisition of firearms and to keep communities safe.”

NSSF’s effort to educate on straw purchases in its 25th year

The campaign will be featured on 20 highway billboards and 40 displays at Miami Metro bus transit shelters. “Buy a gun for someone who can’t and buy yourself 15 years in jail. Don’t Lie for the Other Guy.”

Then there’s the possible $250,000 fine that may be assessed on the gun buyer. If the purchase is consummated to transport the weapon across state lines, additional penalties may apply.

The effort kicks off the 25th year of the NSSF working with law enforcement agencies to keep firearms out of the wrong hands.

A person who legally purchases a firearm must undergo a NICS background check and comply with state and local laws. A straw purchase occurs when a person prohibited from possessing a firearm enlists another individual to buy it on their behalf.
