North Carolina lawmakers have a regular rite during which they convene to attempt to override controversial gubernatorial vetoes. On July 29, this year’s edition will feature a rancorous debate over the merits of implementing constitutional carry.
A successful bid to overturn Gov. Josh Stein’s veto would make the Tar Heel State the 30th in the Union to recognize this fundamental right.
Anti-gunners claim constitutional carry makes citizens “less safe”
Last month’s Senate vote that sent Senate Bill 50 to Stein’s desk passed by a 26-18 margin after two House Republicans crossed the aisle and joined Democrats in a solid wall of opposition to Second Amendment rights.
The governor then attempted to explain his veto by claiming that constitutional carry would somehow make residents “less safe.”
Despite this, there is no evidence that violent crime increased due to this fundamental freedom being exercised in 29 other states. The facts are not allowed to get in the way of a loud argument, and anti-gunners need no proof to back their rhetoric.
Raw numbers are not in favor of a successful veto override
Although Republicans have a supermajority in the state Senate and are only one vote short of that margin in the House, the numbers currently do not indicate a successful veto override. Every Republican would need to attend and vote in favor of the override AND get the support of at least one Senate Democrat.
There is a clear line of demarcation forming across the nation between states that seek to suppress the right to keep and bear arms and those that support it.
Law-abiding citizens now enjoy constitutional carry in the majority, and North Carolina would be a great addition to the freedom fold. Unfortunately, it may have to wait before joining the ranks of its brethren in upholding Second Amendment rights.
There’s no better way to support the 2A than with merch that speaks before you do.
