Political leaders attempting to rewrite history and blur their track records are as old as politics itself. However, the sheer audacity of some lawmakers who count on voter amnesia remains shocking in 2025.
Take the novel case of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), a man who obviously aspires for a certain Pennsylvania Ave. address. His record is such that there is no denying his anti-gun credentials, but he still seeks to hide the truth.
Governor tried to burnish his Second Amendment credentials on a recent podcast
Newsom recently appeared on Tennessee-based podcaster Shawn Ryan’s program and was presented with a unique gift.
A Sig P365 XMACRO semi-automatic handgun.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) reported that, rather than recoil in horror at the audacious present, Newsom embraced it. “By the way, this is too cool. The fact that you would give me this. So, you just want the TSA to take this from me at the airport. I’m onto you, man.”
Newsom claims his radical gun control program is merely ‘common sense’
The governor who wants a promotion to the White House in three years used the podcast as a platform to announce his newfound respect for the Second Amendment.
“I’m not anti-gun at all,” Newsom claimed. “I’m just for some gun safety, common sense, that I think the vast majority of folks to the right and the left agree. And I think we’ve lost a little touch with some common sense around background checks. I think there’s an age appropriateness. I do have some, I’m challenged by large capacity magazine clips in urban centers. And, uh, weapons of war that are out there sometimes outgunning the police.”
He then asserted again that he has “no ideological opposition” to the right to keep and bear arms. Only, the facts shout otherwise.
Take the last two years, for example.
Under Newsom’s leadership, California has implemented a range of measures aimed at restricting Second Amendment rights. An 11% excise tax on firearms and ammunition was instituted for all transactions in the state, and Newsom signed into law a new—and unworkable—program to mandate microstamping technology on handguns.
Since 2022’s momentous Bruen Supreme Court decision, Newsom has guided California lawmakers to enact a series of extreme restrictions on the right to carry arms.
Who can forget Attorney General Rob Bonta (D), a Newsom underling, insidiously leaking personal data on every Golden State concealed carry permit holder?
Furthermore, the state government shoveled millions of taxpayer dollars into smearing guns—and thus gun owners—as impeding public safety.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the industry trade association, mocked the governor by offering the Golden Gate Bridge for sale to anyone who believes in his sudden enlightenment.
The NSSF recalled Newsom’s laughable proposal for a 28th Amendment to the Constitution. This would have effectively exported California’s overwrought gun control schemes nationwide.
Among other changes, the minimum age to purchase a firearm would be codified as 21 across the country, universal background checks would become mandatory, and a national waiting period would be established.
All of this under the guise of a newly discovered “right to safety” that Newsom concocted as California governor.
How bad is Newsom’s track record on gun rights? He signed AB 2571 into law, prohibiting the advertising of weapons that might appeal to young Americans. It would have imposed a staggering $25,000 minimum penalty for any adult-supervised shooting event for young people.
The ban covered the state’s own Department of Fish and Wildlife’s hunter education courses, as well as Boy Scout target shooting badges.
Rewriting history is as old as politics, but Newsom should know better than to deny that which has so much evidence to the contrary. His track record on the Second Amendment is abysmal, and that’s putting it kindly.
