New York Attorney General Leticia James (D) did not wake up one day in office and suddenly discover that there was potential wrongdoing in the headquarters of the National Rifle Association (NRA).
Rather, she made using lawfare against the venerable organization a centerpiece of her campaign for office. The Empire State’s considerable clout was to be weaponized against the NRA, and it was.
Now, James’ chickens may be coming home to roost.
No reasonable observer disputes the political nature of James’s pursuit of the NRA
According to The New York Times, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is scrutinizing past actions by the AG’s office for possible wrongdoing. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Albany issued several subpoenas in its quest for the truth behind the investigation.
It is important to note that there apparently were some much-needed reforms at the NRA. Also key is that they were already in progress when James’ office decided it was her job to destroy the organization.
DOJ wants to know if AG’s office broke the law
The controversial AG first tried to have the NRA completely dissolved, revealing for all the true nature of her intentions.
Failing at that, she attempted to maneuver a court-appointed monitor in place to oversee the NRA’s day-to-day operations. In effect, it would have put the largest and oldest Second Amendment rights advocacy group under the direct supervision/control of the federal government.
That attack also disappeared, and now it will be examined.
Prosecutors convened a grand jury to look into official actions in pursuit of the NRA. They also subpoenaed James’ Albany office for records and communications concerning the actions against the gun rights group.
The investigation promises to be a fight, with James’ office releasing a statement defending her actions against the NRA. “Any weaponization of the justice system should disturb every American. We stand strongly behind our successful litigation.”
