NC Lawmakers Override One Anti-Gun Veto, Second Uncertain

North Carolina legislators broke bread last week as they convened to consider overturning a laundry list of vetoes issued by Gov. Josh Stein (D). On Second Amendment-related issues, there was a clear victory for gun rights, with another issue still pending.

Lawmakers successfully instituted HB 193 to permit private schools to create policies for training and vetted staff to carry firearms on campus.

The law carried both chambers with a veto-proof margin and is set to take effect Dec. 1. Supporters hailed the bill as enabling schools that may not have the resources to have a full-time officer on staff to protect children and adults better.

NC’s path to becoming the 30th state to recognize constitutional carry rights is unclear

Then there’s the heroic attempt by legislators to establish the Tar Heel State as the 30th in the Union to recognize constitutional carry rights.

In a nutshell, SB 50 would mean the state’s law-abiding gun owners would no longer have to crawl to the government for permission to carry their firearms away from home. A full 29 other states have enshrined this fundamental right, but North Carolina’s attempt is on hold.

NC gun owners may be forced to wait for constitutional carry rights

That’s because two House members counted on to support the Second Amendment defected to the other side in the regular session vote. As it currently stands, multiple Democrats will either have to be absent from the coming vote or abstain to enable a veto-proof majority.

It is regrettable that lawmakers cannot be counted on to support basic constitutional rights for their constituents. There are mathematical scenarios in which SB 50 is successful, but they are not likely.

That would mean it will be up to voters to stack the legislature with veto-proof majorities to ensure gun rights are respected.

There’s no better way to support the 2A than with merch that speaks before you do.
