It is undeniable that 2025 has been a refreshing year for turning the tide toward respecting Second Amendment rights. Several significant reforms have been made, the ATF has ceased some of its recent rogue tendencies, and controversial government regulations are no more.
But the war rages on, and temporary victories that can easily be reversed are only somewhat better than no improvements at all.
That’s why Gun Owners of America (GOA) told its membership that the fight is still raging for gun rights. Too much of what appears to be progress on the surface needs to be solidified for lasting celebrations to occur.
GOA lawyers are keeping the pressure on the federal government to respect gun rights
Among its many fronts, the GOA sued the ATF for interfering with the rights of concealed carry permit holders, and Michigan has been at the center of the confrontation.
The current White House provided a temporary solution, but a change in occupancy could reverse that progress in a hurry.
The GOA was successful in securing an injunction to block the previous administration’s scheme to have every private firearm sale involve a background check. But the DOJ is stubbornly holding onto its appeal, meaning it has not given up on the flimsy “engaged in the business” rule.
Temporary victories should lead to permanent solutions
Another Second Amendment rights battle that resulted in apparent victory is not permanent enough for GOA advocates. The ATF recently dropped its hated “zero tolerance” policies that led to hundreds of FFLs losing their federal licenses.
But the GOA continues its suit against the agency, even as the government claims that the litigation is now “moot.”
The ATF’s proper course of action is to enshrine these protections for law-abiding citizens with a permanent status. Gun rights supporters are not content with temporary victories that may vanish like so much smoke, and constitutional rights should not be determined by who wins the next election.
There’s no better way to support the 2A than with merch that speaks before you do.
