The anti-gun circus tent popped up on Capitol Hill again on Tuesday when one of the most tiresome voices in Congress introduced perhaps 2025’s most tone-deaf measure so far.
Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) proposed a bill to not only revive the recently defunct NFA tax on suppressors and short-barreled firearms (SBRs), but to send it soaring through the stratosphere.
The hated $200 tax levied on law-abiding gun owners for daring to purchase silencers and SBRs was recently axed by the Department of Justice. This created consternation among rabid anti-gunners, and Murphy proposed a novel solution.

The transfer tax, previously $200, would be reborn at $4,709.
Murphy claimed that this latest cash grab was the right thing to do. “If we want to save lives in this country, we have to find a way, come hell or high water, to stop mass legalization of silencers in this country.”
They are already legal, for the record, but the tax rate is set to drop to $0 in January 2026.

Murphy’s proposed amendment was added to the Republican reconciliation bill currently in Congress. Still, its chances of passing are negligible, and of being signed into law in the White House even less so.
But it is a powerful signal of what the actual goals are of those who claim to be motivated by “public safety.” They see the Second Amendment and all of its practitioners as the enemy, and if they cannot ban firearms outright, they will settle for whittling the right down until it is meaningless.
The senator is quite aware of what he is trying to accomplish. It is up to gun rights supporters to make sure that doesn’t happen.
