Second Amendment opponents are predictably long on inflammatory rhetoric and short on facts and sound arguments. The problem is, the mainstream media tends to parrot these talking points without critical thinking.
This makes it doubly important to spread the truth.
For example, anti-gunners’ logic assumes that as firearm ownership and carry increase, violent crime likewise rises. However, a new report from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC) pours cold water on this already shaky theory.
Increased gun ownership did not produce results Second Amendment opponents expected
The state saw a notable decrease in murders, from 384 in 2023 to 312 in 2024. That’s a very respectable 18.8% decline.
Meanwhile, active concealed pistol licenses increased in Washington in 2024. The supposedly “conventional” wisdom deployed by gun rights opponents should have meant that the rise in firearm ownership resulted in blood flowing in the streets.
There were nearly six thousand more carry licenses at the end of last year than at the beginning, and public safety improved.
Violent crime rates fell even as gun ownership increased
To be clear, no one is claiming that the increase in Washington residents legally able to carry firearms directly resulted in a substantial reduction (7.6% overall) in violent crime.
However, what can be said with absolute certainty is that the surge in lawful carry did not in any way produce carnage and mayhem. The 595-page WASPC report notes this obvious conclusion.
The writing said: “It would be pure speculation to contend violent crimes declined because more law-abiding citizens were legally armed, but there would be no supposition in pointing to the obvious: More legally armed citizens did not translate to more murders or gun-related violence.”
The opposite conclusion would have been trumpeted from the mountaintops, but this data will barely see the light of day. It is up to Second Amendment supporters to ensure that the truth is spread to counter the steady drumbeat of falsehoods.
