After a loud ruckus in June over the issue of concealed carry in the Michigan State Capitol Building, a lawmaker made an interesting proposal to her colleagues.

State Rep. Gina Johnsen (R) urged her fellow Lansing leaders to allow law-abiding citizens with concealed carry licenses to possess their weapons in the Capitol.

Johnsen explained, “We are trying to get back to the basics of you get to defend yourself, you get to feel safe in Michigan, even including the Capitol, and you get to concealed carry.”

Rock star strolled into the Michigan Capitol packing heat, and the world didn’t end

The current dust-up began in June when rock legend Ted Nugent successfully brought a concealed weapon into the Michigan Capitol. The celebrated outdoorsman was present to speak to a joint committee hearing over state hunting regulations.

Nugent was screened when he arrived, and a Michigan State Police spokesperson said in a statement that it was a staff error. “The weapons detection system functioned correctly and alerted to a possible weapon; however, the trooper staffing the entry point did not see the alert until after Mr. Nugent left the screening area.”

Lawmaker insists that allowing the good people to concealed carry makes the population safer

If Johnsen gets her way, such incidents will be a relic of the past for licensed concealed carry permit holders.

In the not-too-distant past, this activity was perfectly legal. But the Michigan State Capitol Commission banned open carry of weapons on the premises in 2021 and concealed carry two years later.

State lawmakers and Capitol security forces can carry concealed weapons if they have lawful permits.

Johnsen defended her proposal to local media, announcing that if passed, the bill would keep Michigan residents safe. Now it’s up to her colleagues to support enhancing public safety while respecting constitutional rights.
