Amid controversial federal efforts to increase public safety in the nation’s capital comes a new report detailing the reestablishment of Second Amendment rights.
According to Fox News, the White House’s Making DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force recently acted on a March executive order. Part of that job was to examine and streamline the Washington, D.C. process for law-abiding individuals to obtain a gun permit.
District residents may now exercise fundamental rights they should have enjoyed all along
White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told the outlet that the task force “has been working with local officials to eliminate longstanding obstacles and successfully reduced the average permit processing time from several months to just five days.”
This is wonderful news for the many who need to protect themselves from Washington’s criminal element.
And how does the streamlining work? Quite simply, actually.
Reforms should mean more citizens being their own first responders
According to a White House official, the previous wait to schedule a firearms registration appointment was typically four months. Of course, this is off-putting for anyone needing a weapon for self-defense or just sport shooting.
The upgraded system now schedules appointments for as soon as the next day to register firearms with the Metropolitan PD. The department also advertises on its website a schedule for walk-in appointments.
Likewise, there is good news for citizens seeking a concealed carry permit or just wanting to exercise their full constitutional rights as Americans.
Where previously the applicant had to typically cool their heels for “several months” waiting on a response, that time is now slashed to only 4.6 days.
The city further simplified the process for acquiring appointments for firearm registration and obtaining a concealed carry permit. These changes are a far cry from the oppressive gun control regime that has been entrenched in D.C.
They are enthusiastically welcomed by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) Chairman Alan Gottlieb.
“We know how historically hostile the District government has been toward the Second Amendment,” Gottlieb declared, “and we are delighted the president’s task force has apparently turned this around. Any effort to combat violent crime must include making it possible for honest citizens to fight back. This has not been possible under previous administrations, which discouraged people from exercising their fundamental rights.”
The Second Amendment advocate went on to describe the District’s previous gun control apparatus as “deliberately sluggish” and operating at a “snail’s pace.”
These purposeful shortcomings served as nothing more than barricades between law-abiding citizens and their constitutional freedoms. Certainly the D.C. track record is one of exploding crime despite oppressive gun control.
Citizens have labored for decades under the District’s restrictive laws infringing on the right to keep and bear arms.
Most popular sporting rifles are strictly banned, and concealed carry permit holders must reapply for their license every two years. Residents are not permitted to have ammunition for any weapon not currently registered with the Metropolitan PD.
Those seeking to register a weapon and obtain a concealed carry permit must complete a firearms training course along with other district requirements. These remain in place, but institutional foot-dragging should be a relic of the past.
On top of all these ineffective restrictions, the District is littered with sweeping “gun-free” zones that accomplish nothing. Government buildings, public memorials, medical offices, and establishments that sell alcohol are just some of the off-limits spots.
And the group’s work is likely not over.
Reformers are considering allowing female concealed carry permit holders to stash their weapon in a handbag instead of being required to have it strapped to the body.
