North Carolina’s uneven lurch toward becoming the 30th state in the Union enshrining constitutional carry rights is now in the hands of the state House.
The Senate last month to overturn Gov. Josh Stein’s (D) veto of the bill to eliminate the need to crawl to the government for permission to carry a concealed weapon.
Freedom to Carry NC is back before the House for consideration, and though gun rights advocates endorse it, it is not without criticism.
NRA cautioned that even if constitutional carry is passed, there is still work to be done
The National Rifle Association (NRA) warned that the bill “creates scenarios in which a person could lawfully purchase and possess a firearm but still be prohibited from carrying that firearm for self-defense purposes.”
In a release after the Senate voted to override Stein’s veto in July, the NRA emphasized that the bill is far from perfect. The Second Amendment advocacy organization “stands firm in its belief that if an individual is lawfully allowed to purchase and possess a firearm, that person should be allowed to carry that firearm for self-defense without a permit under a true constitutional carry bill.”
NSSF encourages NC lawmakers to put public safety first and override Stein’s veto
Still, the bill will represent progress in gun rights in a state that historically honors the Second Amendment.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the industry trade association, encouraged NC lawmakers to do the right thing and override Stein’s veto.
The NSSF’s Larry Keane wrote that opposition forces are up in arms over the potential veto override. “Needless to say, gun control activists and anti-gun groups aren’t happy about that development. They prefer infringing on Second Amendment rights and penalizing law-abiding Americans instead of holding criminals accountable for their actions when they break the law.”
