An Arkansas man found himself in a desperate situation early Wednesday morning, but he lived to tell about it thanks to his courage and the presence of a loaded firearm.
According to the Forrest City Police Department, the incident unfolded just before 3:30 a.m. A call came in reporting an attempted break-in, and at least one shot was fired after the suspect allegedly removed a window screen and tried to enter through the curtains.
The homeowner had other ideas, and the incident was captured on the city’s SkyCop surveillance system.
The frightening situation was over in seconds as the homeowner stepped up and defended himself
The alleged intruder, later identified as a 24-year-old man from Forrest City, was struck at least once as he attempted to enter through the window. SkyCop showed him running away from the home before he collapsed in a field next to a church.
Authorities found him dead after a short search.
Police Chief Ronald Broussard told reporters that the homeowner did not intend to use deadly force but was left with no choice. He noted that the man who valiantly defended himself expressed grave remorse and developed sleeping issues after the confrontation.

Broussard added that the suspect was well known to authorities and had substance abuse problems. He said the Forest City area could use the deadly encounter as encouragement to address crime and drug issues that so many communities face.
The investigation continues, and no charges have been or likely will be filed against the homeowner.
Of course, taking any human life is an emotionally draining event, no matter the circumstances. But last week’s self-defense shooting by all appearances was a clear-cut example of the Second Amendment’s enormous value in protecting citizens from violent criminals.
