For future reference, a pawn shop might not be the wisest target for violent criminals, even in large groups.
Two California robbery suspects paid for their mistake with their lives, and three others were wounded after employees refused to play their roles as victims. Instead, they fired back at the marauding mob and prevented yet another robbery.
Pawn shops and jewelry stores are not ‘soft targets’ for violent criminals
Eddy Cash for Gold was the objective on Wednesday just before closing time at 8 p.m. Five masked suspects, reportedly from Stockton, allegedly rushed the business and attacked employees.
Bad idea.
Pawn shop workers know they are at an elevated risk for lowlifes to try to rob, and they are ready. Shots were exchanged, and two of the suspects were killed for their mistakes, while three others were wounded and face murder charges if or when they recover.
Employees who responded to the orchestrated attack are not likely to face criminal charges
Oakland Deputy Chief Nick Longe told reporters that the survivors created the situation that led to their partners’ deaths. “We believe their compatriots are responsible for those deaths and therefore booked on homicide charges.”
The mission now is for investigators to untangle the mess. Chief Floyd Mitchell explained that the probe is in its early stages, and it will “take time to determine who shot first in regard to who pulled out the guns first.”
Maybe. But the aggressors and instigators in this case are clear, and even in California, self-defense by a business owner against an armed attack is still permissible.
Wednesday’s attempted robbery may not have been an isolated incident in Oakland. Officials are investigating a similar attack on a nearby jewelry store just hours before the pawn shop incident.
