A Washington state homeowner had to make a tough call early Sunday morning when he notified authorities that he had shot a man allegedly attempting to break into his Pierce County home.
The unidentified 51-year-old man was forced into action at about 1:45 a.m. when the suspect reportedly began trying to force his way in.
Pierce County Sheriff’s Office PIO Officer Carly Cappetto told reporters that investigators found video to back up the homeowner’s version of events.
No charges were filed against the homeowner who defended his family
“In the surveillance video, it does show that the suspect had a gun in his hand and was actively banging on [the] back door of that homeowner in a fully fenced backyard.” Officers later determined that the suspect walked around multiple homes in the neighborhood.
Responding deputies found the suspect dead on the back porch, suffering an apparent gunshot wound.
Cappetto explained that the incident was clearly one of self-defense. “We’re not making any arrests on this case. This is a tragic incident for everybody involved. Nobody ever wants to take somebody’s life. But in this situation, we have a homeowner who was protecting his family.”
Officials still consider the incident to be a homicide
She was right. No reasonable person celebrates taking another individual’s life, and the homeowner undoubtedly will have to take time to process what happened Sunday morning.
But that decision was made for him when the suspect allegedly attempted to enter uninvited in the middle of the night.
It is foolhardy not to realize the very real possibility that the occupant is armed and unafraid to defend themselves and their loved ones.
Interestingly, Cappetto added that Seattle authorities consider the case to be a homicide, despite the self-defense nature of the shooting. “The proper term for anyone’s death caused by another person is a homicide, as much as people don’t like that term.”
