Arkansas authorities are investigating a violent incident in which an elderly man apparently used his firearm to shoot and kill an intruder.
It was Wednesday evening when the homeowner was waiting for his wife to return from church. When he heard a noise, he thought it was her returning from the service.
Instead, he heard a man’s voice.
Cornered in his bedroom, the elderly intended victim was left with no choice
According to Cherokee Village Police Department investigators, the suspect is believed to have entered through a sliding glass door at the rear of the home. Imagine the resident’s surprise at hearing a male speak when he expected his wife to return home from worship.
This startling revelation led the homeowner to wisely retrieve a handgun from his bedroom. From there, he had to decide how to handle the intruder, who was later identified as 36-year-old Samuel West.
As the suspect advanced, the intended victim retreated and ordered the unknown man to “stop.” That warning went unheeded, and when the alleged intruder continued to move forward, the homeowner fired multiple rounds.
The deceased suspect had an extensive history of felony arrests
Officials revealed that West had just been released from the Sharp County Detention Center earlier that day. He was arrested and held for allegedly violating a no-contact order with his estranged wife.
Court records showed the deceased suspect had a lengthy criminal record of felonies related to theft and drug charges dating back to 2009.
Police Chief Monte Lane told reporters that investigators gathered evidence from the scene until past midnight. No arrests were made, and none are likely in what Lane indicated appeared to be a clear-cut case of self-defense.
An elderly man squared up with a career criminal may not seem like much of a challenge, but that’s where the Second Amendment comes in. As upstanding citizens have known for centuries, nothing beats the “great equalizer.”
