Current Minnesota governor and former vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz (D) doesn’t know when to leave well enough alone.
After weeks of failed attempts to ram an “assault weapon” ban through the legislature with a proposed special session, Walz realized that Minnesota lawmakers are simply too enamored with individual rights to give them away.
Now he is floating the idea of a constitutional amendment to prohibit popular sporting rifles, a silly move that does not in any way address recent tragedies.
Walz’s gun control scheme failed to gain traction with Minnesota lawmakers
The Annunciation Catholic School shooting on August 27 resulted in more tired calls to strip the right to keep and bear arms from upstanding citizens. Perhaps a push to keep violent criminals off the street and provide mental healthcare would gain traction, but that was not Walz’s agenda.
For the record, only one of the three weapons used in the school attack was semi-automatic. That fact, however, is lost on anti-gun lawmakers.
Anti-gunners continue to exploit tragedies for political gain
To place an amendment on the Minnesota ballot, a majority of each chamber of the state Legislature must approve the measure. According to the Secretary of State’s website, “if a majority of all the people voting at the election vote to ratify an amendment, it becomes a part of the Constitution.”
Walz on Saturday told the media that he believes such a ban is wildly popular in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. “The state would have the voters take a vote because we know it’s super popular.”
The National Rifle Association (NRA) strongly disagreed.
The organization posted on X that Walz and his cronies are bent on destroying the Second Amendment and banning the most popular sporting rifles in the U.S.
“When it comes to stripping you of your rights, Walz just won’t quit,” the NRA declared. “As pro-gun lawmakers stonewall the failed White House hopeful, Walz looks to push a constitutional amendment to ban commonly owned firearms.”
