California added to its growing gun control mess on Friday when Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed Assembly Bill 1127, the controversial “Glock Ban,” into law.
New sales of these wildly popular handguns and similar models will be prohibited as of July 1, 2026, without a successful legal challenge. Licensed dealers will be banned from selling any semi-automatic handgun considered to be “readily convertible” into functioning as a fully automatic firearm.
Lawmakers took a precise aim to eradicate these common firearms.
California banned the most popular handguns over an act that is already illegal
Glock handguns are noted for using a cruciform sear mechanism, a reliable system technically described in AB 1127. A simple device known as a Glock switch is used by some to convert the handgun’s function to fully automatic.
Federal law already prohibits the use of Glock switches, but California’s pending statute goes far beyond anything coming out of Washington. Proponents claim such a blanket ban is necessary to prevent fully automatic weapons from becoming a scourge on the nation’s streets.

By now, everyone embroiled in the gun rights controversy knows that firearms in “common use” are protected by the Second Amendment. The Supreme Court in 2008’s landmark Heller decision determined that the Bill of Rights safeguards standard weapons.

The Golden State is hellbent on throwing any possible gun control scheme against the wall to see which will stick, and freedom-loving organizations must draw the line on such infringements.
