Imagine hearing gunshots coming from a neighbor’s residence at night—what would you do?
Many would ignore it, hoping it was just a car backfiring. Some would call 911 and report the disturbance and then wait by the window for the blue lights to magically appear.
For one armed neighbor in Grover, North Carolina, neither option was chosen.
One good neighbor stepped up and ended the apparent burglary attempt
It was around 11 p.m. on Monday when a man heard gunfire ring through the night. He did what he was prepared for, grabbed a firearm, and raced to the neighbor’s home.
The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office responded to the reported burglary. Investigators later determined that the burglar was caught red-handed in the act by the homeowner, and that’s when he fired multiple shots.
The armed neighbor arrived only to have the suspect allegedly point his firearm at the Good Samaritan. The suspect, only described as a male in a yellow sweatshirt, reportedly fired on the homeowner and threatened the responder.
Community members vow to be prepared for the next time
The neighbor fired his own shots, which apparently did not strike the suspect. Officials are searching for an Audi believed to have been used in the getaway.
Other neighbors told local media that the community is prepared to defend itself against violent criminals. Clayton Campbell explained to reporters that anyone threatening the community needs to be warned.
“We’ve always told people not to mess around down here because we’ll do what we have to do to protect our homes,” Campbell declared. “And the people who came messing around last night realized we weren’t playing when we said that.”
The neighbor added that the night could have ended differently, but it’s important to remember that none of the residents were injured.
