A Florida sheriff had a little fun with a confrontation that exploded at a Polk County McDonald’s last weekend, but the incident could have been far more serious without an armed employee responding to a threat.
The restaurant apparently was overwhelmed by a deluge of online orders in the early morning hours of Sunday, and this led to at least two disgruntled customers.
Angry customers allegedly claimed to have a firearm and made threats
Investigators believe Nicholas Jones, 18, and Peter Story, 20, became outraged when they heard bad news in the drive-thru. Employee Yoan Soto, 21, informed the pair that the restaurant was too far behind to take any more orders.
Clearly unsatisfied, the duo then reportedly told the worker that they were going to wait until his shift ended and jump him. They then parked and entered McDonald’s while Soto returned to his duties, and at some point, they indicated that they were armed.
Busy Sunday morning turned into what could have been a deadly incident
The two allegedly continued to threaten Soto. The stubborn pair refused to leave even after being told by the manager to vacate the premises.
Fed up, the employee retrieved a firearm and pointed it at Jones and Story in front of the counter. When they reportedly tried to grab Soto’s handgun, he fired.
Story was wounded in the neck, and he was very lucky.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd detailed the “McMess” law enforcement was called to clean up. “It’s a blessing that it was a very minor wound, but you know what? When you start shooting McGuns, you’ll get people’s attention, and they’ll let you McHave the restaurant and that’s what they did.”
Story and Jones face charges of trespass after warning and disorderly conduct.
As for Soto, he initially ran but later returned and cooperated with investigators. For reasons that are not clear, he now faces a felony charge of tampering with evidence.
