There’s an old saying in which a person with nerves of steel is described as having “the guts of a burglar.”
However, as more Americans arm themselves to protect their families and homes, “guts” could easily be replaced with “foolishness.” After all, there are an increasing number of incidents in which an armed private citizen is their own first responder and defends themselves from violent criminals.
The latest example exploded at a residence in San Bernardino, California, at approximately 7 a.m. Wednesday and demonstrated yet again why the freedom to defend one’s home is priceless.
A violent break-in ended tragically for the alleged perpetrator
The Apple Valley Police Department released a statement summarizing the violent incident:
“The investigation revealed Todd Johnson approached the residence and attempted to forcibly enter the home. An occupant of the residence shot the suspect. Johnson received medical attention at the scene and was transported to a hospital for further treatment.”
Officials further noted that the suspect will remain in custody and be booked for residential robbery when he is medically cleared. There were no other injuries.
Without the Second Amendment, other liberties may quickly become meaningless
The Second Amendment is a priceless part of the American fabric, and it is unique in its role in protecting the God-given right to self-defense. Of course, law-abiding citizens use firearms for everything from big game hunting to target shooting on holidays with family.
But the essential mission of this critical freedom is the ability to defend oneself from a violent threat or a tyrannical government. Without this liberty, all others may quickly become irrelevant.
The Founding Fathers knew that to guarantee the fruits of independence, the right to keep and bear arms must be enshrined. This foresight continues to pay dividends centuries later.
