Millions set aside the last day of October for costume-wearing revelry and trick-or-treating by the little and not-so-little ones with family and neighbors.
Holidays should not be prime time for burglaries and home invasions, but there are good reasons why law-abiding citizens should remain on alert despite the festivities. One was dramatically revealed in Oklahoma just before midnight on Halloween.

Tulsa Police Department investigators believe that 20-year-old Jamond Silas kicked in an apartment door before being immediately confronted.
The person who dialed 911 reported that they “heard around 20 gunshots, then saw a man down on the ground with a gun next to him.” The occupant and shooter told investigators that Silas broke into the apartment and that he fired his weapon in fear for his life.
The suspect died at the scene.

As for the unidentified resident who defended himself, TPD investigators questioned him before releasing him pending further investigation. It is unclear whether he knew his alleged assailant, and the case will be handed over to the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office to ultimately determine if charges will be filed.
That appears unlikely.
Oklahoma is firmly on the roster of U.S. states that emphatically uphold Second Amendment rights. Lawmakers are quick to defend victims and go after perpetrators in ways that the unfortunate citizens of some of the Sooner State’s peers can only dream of.
The fundamental right to keep and bear arms affords good people the ability to use lethal force to defend themselves when under attack. This is a freedom that should never be a bargaining chip, as one Oklahoma man well knows today.
