When Second Amendment opponents wake up celebrating the morning after an election, that is never a good sign for those who treasure constitutional rights. In Virginia, it’s a warning.
Voters on Tuesday chose Abigail Spanberger (D) as their new governor. As the National Rifle Association (NRA) so succinctly observed, “the results couldn’t be clearer.”
Youngkin held the line against a mad rush of gun control bills
Outgoing Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) valiantly defended the right to keep and bear arms from the House of Delegates’ onslaught. That body is in the firm control of an anti-2A majority, and the governor will no longer be an ally of gun rights.
Now, it’s the radical extremists’ turn.
The NRA noted that the good people of Virginia may now expect a crushing wave of oppressive measures to be enacted. Lawmakers will undoubtedly continue their push to prohibit the most popular sporting rifles in the U.S., and with their majority, nothing is stopping them from enacting these infringements.
Gun rights supporters are ready to wage legal war in Virginia
Expect another rush to declare large swaths of the state off-limits for carrying firearms.
Anti-Second Amendment organization Giffords PAC quickly applauded the election results. Founder and former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords could not hide her excitement.
“Over the past few months, I’ve traveled across the commonwealth and heard from Virginians who are sick and tired of gun safety bills being blocked by Gov. Youngkin,” Giffords said. “They demanded change at the ballot box—they made it clear they want leaders who would finally put public safety ahead of politics and are committed to taking action to keep their communities safe.”
Legal battle lines are drawn, and gun rights supporters can see the mission before them. Elections do not change the Constitution, only those who are sworn to uphold it.
