It is not a question of if but when the U.S. Supreme Court will weigh in decisively on the issue of popular sporting rifles. Opponents of these firearms smear them as “assault weapons” and “military-grade” instruments of war.
In the meantime, tens of millions of law-abiding Americans utilize these guns for everything from sport shooting and hunting to self-defense.
Many observers expect SCOTUS to take up the challenge to Connecticut’s gun control regime
This week, the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) petitioned SCOTUS for review in Grant v. Rovella. This case was brought by the advocacy group and its partners against Connecticut’s prohibition against “assault weapons.”
SAF Executive Director Adam Kraut noted that indications from the high court are that justices are ready to decide the issue.
“Last term, Justice Kavanaugh said that he suspected the Court would take up the assault weapons issue in the next term or two,” Kraut declared. “Our goal as a leader in the Second Amendment advocacy space is to build and present every possible opportunity for the Court to do exactly that. Bans like Connecticut’s are in direct contradiction to the demands of the Constitution and prior Supreme Court decisions, and it’s time they’re relegated to the dustbin of history.”
A high court ruling in favor of 2A rights would have broad implications
The case, filed in 2022, targets Connecticut’s ban on weapons that include the most popular sporting rifles in the country. SAF founder and Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb observed that the implications of a high court ruling extend far beyond one state’s borders.
“This case has far-reaching implications for the entire country,” Gottlieb said. “Residents of Connecticut and the other 10 states that have similar laws face felony prosecution for owning any number of firearms that are in common use around the country.”
