Political posturing is as old as politics itself, but modern-day anti-gunners are busy making it into an art form. Despite the utter futility of toothless restrictions on Second Amendment rights, they persist in throwing good legislation after bad.
St. Paul, Minnesota, citizens face a new round of gun control after the city government this week passed an “assault weapons” ban, along with other ridiculous provisions.
Mayor Melvin Carter (D) confessed that the statute is completely unenforceable, but it’s still on the books after passing with a unanimous vote.
St. Paul gun owners would face an overwhelming rush of new regulations without the state’s preemption law
Minnesota residents are fortunate that, despite having an anti-gun governor and dozens of radical lawmakers ready to eradicate constitutional rights, the state has a powerful preemption law.
Simply put, Second Amendment-related restrictions cannot go beyond those of the state. This way, there will not be an unworkable patchwork quilt of statutes that magically transform law-abiding citizens into criminals for simply driving into town.
Supporters believe stripping gun rights enhances public safety
Carter claimed that if the state preemption law is struck down, it will usher in a new era of safety and prosperity.
“This ordinance represents a collective effort by local leaders taking a long-overdue step to protect our children, families, and neighbors,” the mayor said. “Too many have suffered the unimaginable while others debated. It’s time for state leaders to meet us in this moment of urgency and safeguard the future our children deserve.”
Here’s a better idea. Enforce criminal laws on the books, fully support law enforcement in their quest to protect innocent civilians, and stop the revolving door of justice that lets violent criminals off with barely a warning.
But that agenda won’t fly in St. Paul.
Instead, the good people are left with a potential ban on the most popular sporting rifles in the U.S. These semi-automatic firearms are used by upstanding people every day for everything from sport shooting and hunting to critical self-defense.
And the ban goes far beyond prohibiting an entire class of weapons.
Standard-capacity gun magazines and binary triggers would be illegal within the city limits. The government would now mandate that all firearms be serialized, effectively eliminating the centuries-old practice of crafting weapons at home.
The new law, if allowed to take effect, would enforce “sensitive spaces” in locations such as city buildings, parks, libraries, and recreation centers.
Mandatory signage would be posted in public facilities to inform the public of restrictions on carrying firearms and to encourage compliance with the order.
The statute also permits the establishment of penalties and those who would carry them out if and when state leaders rescind the preemption law. If nothing else, the St. Paul action is a clear signal of the intentions of anti-gunners if preemption falls by the wayside.
And the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus is already fighting the law. This came a mere seven minutes after it was signed, and the group issued a powerful release declaring this latest infringement would not go unchallenged.
“Today, the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus, in conjunction with the Minnesota Gun Owners Law Center, sued the City of St. Paul for passing an illegal gun ban ordinance that directly violates Minnesota’s firearms preemption statutes,” the writing proclaimed.
Organization President Rob Doar called out the city council for passing an obviously illegal law that impedes constitutionally guaranteed rights.
“When a city adopts criminal regulations beyond its delegated powers, it not only acts unlawfully but directly harms our members’ rights,” Doar said. “The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus made every effort to encourage the Council to comply with state law, but their refusal to do so left us with no choice but to seek judicial intervention.”
There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.
Defend America is more than a name, it’s a stand for freedom, resilience, and the values this country was built on. Every tee, hat, and mug is a symbol of unapologetic pride. Wear it loud, wear it proud, and let the world know: freedom isn’t negotiable.
