There was much to inflame Second Amendment advocates in recent years, but little rankled more than the so-called Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA).
It “earned” the bipartisan label only because Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) crossed the aisle to join a solid bloc of gun rights opponents. Another lawmaker, Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX), now looks to partially rectify this injustice.
Hunt’s Second Amendment Restoration Act targets federal incentives for “red flag” laws and halts funding for expanding the NICS system.

“The Second Amendment Restoration Act reverses the dangerous provisions of the so-called Safer Communities Act, which pushed red flag laws on Texans and funded their expansion nationwide,” Hunt explained. “The Constitution is crystal clear: Our right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Every lawmaker who claims to stand for freedom should support this bill without hesitation. Protecting the right of Americans to defend themselves and their families is not just policy, it’s principle.”
The essence of the bill is to enable law enforcement to continue pursuing weapons traffickers without catching millions of law-abiding citizens in the same broad net.
Lawmaker chastises gun rights opponents for going after the wrong targets
Hunt’s colleagues echoed his support for righting past wrongs.
“The federal government’s focus should be on stopping violent criminals—not burdening responsible Americans who exercise their right to keep and bear arms,” Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL) declared. “I’m proud to stand with Rep. Hunt and my colleagues in defending the God-given freedoms that make this nation strong.”
Influential supporters of Hunt’s proposal include the National Rifle Association (NRA), Gun Owners of America (GOA), and the National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR).
Grassroots support from gun owners is critical in this and so many other efforts to defend constitutional freedoms. These groups protect our rights daily and are a vanguard against even further encroachment on the ability to keep and bear arms.
