A South Florida homeowner is undoubtedly thankful today that he had the wisdom to have a loaded firearm readily available early Saturday evening. That decision may have saved his life.
The Miami-Dade County man was inside his Kendall residence just before 7 p.m. when four suspects allegedly tried to force their way inside. They apparently did not expect to encounter armed resistance, but that’s the chance you take in the U.S. when you target an innocent civilian.
A loaded firearm quickly flipped the four-on-one confrontation
Facing four strangers, the homeowner opened fire.
One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body. First responders transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds. The other three intruders quickly fled.
The mother of the unidentified suspect who was shot and killed expressed her reaction to the news. She told local media on Sunday morning that she was “in shock, disbelief, hurt.” She added that it was not like her son to break into someone’s home.

A neighbor told police that he heard two shots before adding that he did not know of such an incident occurring in the area before. Investigators continue their search for the three suspects who raced from the fatal incident.
Given that Florida is Florida, it is unlikely that the homeowner faces legal trouble for defending themselves. That does not mean they do not carry the burden of having taken another human’s life, even under circumstances where they were backed into a corner and left with no choice.
It is an increasingly dangerous proposition for violent criminals to target law-abiding Americans. That’s because tens of millions are armed and ready to defend life and property from those who would bring them harm.
