Online sales by individuals are here to stay, but there are increasingly alarming reports that they are a tool for violent criminals to target innocent victims.
A South Carolina man found himself in this frightening situation on Sunday evening when he met with two strangers to consummate an online transaction. Predictably, concluding a sale was the last thing on the minds of the two suspects.
Victim wanted to complete a transaction, but instead faced two alleged robbers
Instead, investigators believe 20-year-old Daquan Lewis Benjamin and 19-year-old Devin Moultrie lay in wait for the victim. When he appeared, they allegedly pulled weapons and attempted to rob him before opening fire.
The man was seriously wounded, but not before he managed to grab his firearm and strike both of the suspects with bullets.
With the threat neutralized, he called 911 and drove himself to the hospital despite his wounds. The victim was met on the way by first responders and treated as he was transported for more intensive medical attention.
Suspects face a slew of charges after being shot by their alleged target
Not surprisingly, the two young suspects were found a short time later seeking emergency treatment at an area hospital. Benjamin was released into custody of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, and Moultrie at last report remained hospitalized in unknown condition.
Both are expected to face charges that include two counts of attempted armed robbery, attempted murder, kidnapping, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Personal sales on online platforms are not going away, and these transactions often lead to face-to-face encounters. These should always be conducted in a public, well-lit location, and some local governments even have arrangements to conclude these sales at a designated area for safety.
And it is always a good idea to be legally armed and prepared for the unknown.
