Gun Owners of America (GOA) released a powerful warning last week concerning the Department of Justice (DOJ) and a controversial brief. The advocacy group and its partners are in a legal battle with federal officials over the hated National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA).

Remaining NFA restrictions on gun rights were enacted during the violent Prohibition Era to clamp down on gangland turf wars. Congress wisely removed the contentious $200 tax on suppressors and short-barreled rifles earlier this year, reducing the transfer tax to $0.
The 2A organization spared no words in its description of the DOJ’s latest actions.

“GOA and GOF condemn Attorney General Pam Bondi (R) and President Trump’s (R) Department of Justice for doubling down on enforcement of an archaic and unconstitutional law while simultaneously offering legal theories that would expand federal power to historic levels,” the GOA warned. “This is especially striking from an administration that had promised to respect the Second Amendment and review burdensome agency rules.”
The release blasted DOJ maneuvering as creating “a framework under which Congress and federal agencies regulate—or effectively ban—common firearms and accessories.”
Removing the $200 tax was progress, but not if it is used “as a pretext to rewrite the limits of congressional power.”
The GOA further noted that such action would empower federal bureaucrats to have far more control than the Founding Fathers imagined. Even with a much more gun-friendly administration, it is crucial to monitor those who have the means to strip away constitutional rights.
