It is indefensible that young adults are denied the Constitution’s complete protection through arbitrary anti-gun laws that do nothing to enhance public safety.
In Michigan, State Representative Jason Woolford (R) introduced House Bill 4586 to reverse this injustice in his home state. If successful, the minimum age to acquire a concealed pistol license (CPL) will be lowered from 21 to 18.
An 18-year-old adult is certainly part of “the people”
Woolford explained the fallacy of allowing an 18-year-old to possess a handgun and openly carry but not allowing the same citizen to acquire a concealed carry license.
“Every safeguard that exists in our current concealed carry process remains fully intact,” Woolford said. “The only change is recognizing that an 18-year-old adult…should be trusted to exercise the same right of self-defense.”
The Michigan bill would keep current safeguards in place
The state representative recalled that he served in the U.S. Marines as a 19-year-old. “At the time, I was firing M60s, rocket launchers, and 9mm handguns. But back home, I would not be allowed to buy a pistol.”
The veteran added that it makes no sense that the same people who defend the nation cannot carry a concealed firearm for self-defense.
Woolford’s bill would keep in place all current protection to ensure that firearms do not fall into the wrong hands. CPL applicants would still need to undergo criminal background checks with the FBI and Michigan authorities.
The mandatory safety training course with live fire components would remain. Only the minimum age would be changed to afford full constitutional protection to young adults.
After all, there is little question that “the people” as referred to by the Second Amendment includes all legal adults. This age group may perform all the functions of an adult but is inexplicably denied equal protection under Michigan law.
