Chicago officials are well known for their opposition to gun rights, and along with Illinois state lawmakers, they do everything in their power to build walls between the good people and firearm ownership.
The simple truth is that they should be thankful that the Second Amendment exists to give citizens a fair chance when faced with violent criminals.
Take early Monday morning, for example.
A late-night shock quickly turned into a violent confrontation
The intended victim was a 58-year-old concealed carry permit holder, and he is thankful today that he exercised his rights. That’s because, at roughly 3:40 a.m. Monday, he heard a car alarm in his South Chicago neighborhood.
When he went outside to investigate, he allegedly found his driver’s side window shattered and two young men in his vehicle. One of them reportedly brandished a firearm.
The permit holder fired at least two shots, striking a 17-year-old suspect. He was transported to a local hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening wounds while the accomplice fled in a minivan.
There’s always trepidation surrounding armed self-defense and possible blowback
The man who defended himself was perfectly within his rights to investigate after he heard the car alarm. And when one of the suspects allegedly produced a weapon, he did what any courageous citizen would when confronted by such an obvious threat.
Even in his anti-gun city and state, it is doubtful that the intended victim faces legal recourse for defending himself. The time of night and the brandishing of a firearm should be plenty of justification for using potentially lethal force.
This is just the latest example of how gun rights are a fundamental part of American freedoms. It should be a wake-up call for those who believe they do not need to take charge of their own safety.
