Attorney General Pam Bondi’s Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Monday that it is suing Washington, D.C., due to unconstitutional restrictions on gun rights.
The District has a long track record of suppressing the free exercise of the Second Amendment. Bondi’s statement accused the Metropolitan Police Department of illegally prohibiting the most popular semi-automatic sporting rifles.
District officials long demonstrated their lack of respect for Second Amendment rights
“The District’s gun laws require anyone seeking to own a gun to register it with the D.C. Metro Police,” the DOJ statement declared on Monday. “However, the D.C. Code provides a broad registration ban on numerous firearms—an unconstitutional incursion into the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens seeking to own protected firearms for lawful purposes. MPD’s current pattern and practice of refusing to register protected firearms is forcing residents to sue to protect their rights and to risk facing wrongful arrest for lawfully possessing protected firearms.”
Bondi added that the legal action is another example of the DOJ’s new commitment to protecting gun rights.
Recent DOJ actions sent mixed signals on commitment to 2A freedoms
Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, recently announced that feds would take “a lot more action” to protect Second Amendment rights after years of ambivalence or outright hostility.
While this is a welcome move, many in the 2A community are grappling with the DOJ’s recent defense of NFA registration requirements. Last month, the DOJ filed a cross-motion in support of the federal government’s continued registration mandate for various gun-related items.
As controversy continues to swirl around Bondi’s response to the lawsuit, it is absolutely a welcome change for the DOJ to challenge the capital’s gun control regime.
For too long, D.C. lawmakers acted as though they were exempt from the Second Amendment. They were wrong.
