Australia’s Response to Apparent Terror Attack? Yet More Gun Control

The first step to solving a problem is identifying precisely what the problem is. That is a simple premise that officials in Australia struggle with in the wake of an apparent terrorist attack on a Sydney beach last weekend that killed at least 15.

ISIS flags were found in a seized vehicle linked to the two suspects. Yet the government is going out of its way to promise yet more gun control in a nation that already virtually bans most weapons.

On Fox News’ Hannity Monday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) skewered Aussie officials for not addressing the real issue.

“Australia’s got it ass backwards,” Graham declared. “It’s not a gun control problem, folks. You’ve allowed ISIS to come into your country, and never once tonight did you promise the Australian people you’re going to hunt these cells down and kill them all.”

Unfortunately for law-abiding citizens, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese went out of his way this week to promise new gun control measures. As Graham noted, authorities are not gearing up to wage war against terrorists.

Albanese instead announced such proposals as a hard limit on the number of guns an individual may own and rigorous reviews of gun licenses held over time.

Exactly what that would do to stop another hate-fueled terrorist attack is anybody’s guess. But, similar to their U.S. counterparts, the Australian playbook is to respond to criminal acts by going after guns held by innocent civilians.

“The government is prepared to take whatever action is necessary,” Albanese claimed. “Included in that is the need for tougher gun laws. If we need to toughen these up, if there’s anything we can do, I’m certainly up for it.”
