The Atlanta Police Department (APD) continues to investigate what can only be described as a tragic shooting involving a 15-year-old.
Officers were called to a home in southeast Atlanta late Tuesday afternoon due to a person being reportedly shot. First responders found the 15-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound and unresponsive.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined that the unidentified teenager had a firearm and apparently attempted to rob a man. The person who was reportedly the deceased individual’s target desperately flagged down a police officer and asked for help.
Officers took the suspect downtown for questioning, and the APD reported that the evidence aligns with the description the intended victim provided of the shocking events.
The good news is that the target was uninjured.

Still, the death of a 15-year-old, even in an apparent robbery attempt, is disturbing and calls for an in-depth investigation. Authorities went door to door in the Atlanta neighborhood to check for possible witnesses and security video footage.
Barring unforeseen developments, it is doubtful that the man who apparently defended himself will face charges. In no way does that erase the trauma of having to use lethal force to protect himself against a minor, but he will not likely face legal consequences—even in Atlanta.
Despite city leadership that regularly draws criticism for its gun control positions, Georgia’s capital is restricted by state preemption laws that protect the gun rights of law-abiding citizens.
Lawmakers wisely put curbs in place to allow the people to fully exercise their Second Amendment freedoms and defend what is most important to them.
For that, one Atlanta man is grateful today.
