It is the unfortunate reality of living in the Land of Lincoln that, as a gun owner, you are subjected to some of the harshest firearm restrictions in the U.S. You’d think that with all the infringements, Chicago would be a peaceful land of milk and honey, but that is far from the truth.
No matter to anti-gunners. The state now enforces a new gun control law in 2026 that its good citizens need to be aware of.
Firearms must now be locked away under the guise of ‘public safety’
The Safe Gun Storage Act mandates that gun owners lock their weapons away at home. Supporters claim that this new law will keep children safe and guns away from those at risk of harming themselves or others.
The new law states that a firearm owner “shall not store or keep any firearm in any premises where the firearm owner knows or reasonably should know a minor without the lawful permission of the minor’s parent, guardian, or person having charge of the minor, an at-risk person, or a prohibited person is likely to gain access to the firearm unless the firearm is secured in a locked container, properly engaged so as to render the firearm inaccessible or unusable to any person other than the owner or other lawfully authorized user.
Gun owners face steep fines for violating Illinois’ new laws
Responsible firearm owners already safely store their weapons, but Illinois lawmakers wanted this first line of defense so inaccessible as to be virtually meaningless in a real emergency.
If the gun is not kept in a locked container accessible only to the owner, a violator may be fined up to $10,000.
Then, there’s the new requirement that gun owners report the theft of their weapons within 48 hours of determining that they’re gone. The previous mandate was to give notification within 72 hours, but anti-gunners want the screws even tighter on law-abiding citizens.
The Illinois theft victim has already been targeted by wrongdoing. Now they are subject to legal penalties if they do not report the theft to law enforcement within a brief window.
