Imagine returning to your home just before midnight and finding an armed stranger inside. This scenario would be unsettling in any case and possibly tragic if you did not have the means to protect yourself.
That frightening prospect greeted a California homeowner Friday night when he returned and discovered an uninvited guest. Even worse, the intruder had a shotgun which he pointed at the resident.
Then the tables turned.
Homeowner had the good fortune of being prepared for the unexpected
It is unclear how the Redlands homeowner got the drop on his shotgun-wielding alleged assailant, but he did. He was somehow able to get off at least one shot, striking the suspect and sending him running away as fast as he could go.
First responders descended on the scene after the 911 call and quickly located a blood trail. That led them to 52-year-old Daniel Torres Carrion, who was found with items from the home where he was shot.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. Carrion was then booked into the West Valley Detention Center on charges of attempted robbery, burglary, and assault.

At last report he was still being held on $300,000 bail.
The homeowner had to be stunned to find a stranger in his home at such an hour, and it is to his credit that he had a loaded firearm ready and the courage to use it to neutralize the apparent threat. Anyone who breaks into a home in the middle of the night with a shotgun obviously has bad intentions and must be dealt with.
Despite the Golden State’s well-documented animosity to the Second Amendment, this case should be cut and dried. No matter where they live, any law-abiding American has the right to defend themselves—with lethal force if necessary—against violent criminals who would prey on them.
