Second Amendment opponents strive daily to find new ways to suppress the right to keep and bear arms. Unable to ban firearms outright due to the pesky Bill of Rights, they are forced to concoct every conceivable scheme to attack any and all activities related to this fundamental freedom.
The latest example of pushing back against these infringements sprang from Indiana on Tuesday when the House Local Government Committee advanced SB 176. This legislation is critical to protect the state’s gun ranges from government overreach.
Anti-gunners could use zoning and land-use ordinances to squeeze shooting ranges out of business
There are an increasing number of instances where local government entities seek to enact stringent gun control measures far beyond those of the state. Indiana lawmakers sought to protect public and private shooting ranges and establish protocols for ranges and retail sporting goods stores.
SB 176 would ensure that local elected officials may not use zoning or land-use ordinances to drive these essential services into the ground.
Authorities want to avoid a patchwork of conflicting gun laws across the Hoosier State and guarantee that firearm safety training and hunter education remain part of the state’s social fabric.
Proposal would extend preemption protection to gun ranges
The National Rifle Association (NRA) urged its members on its website to act now and contact state representatives to support SB 176. According to the NRA, the proposal “complements the existing firearm preemption statute by providing additional protections for shooting ranges and prohibiting local governments from adopting zoning, land-use, or permitting requirements that are more restrictive than state law.”
The current preemption law already protects Indiana’s sporting community. This new measure would complement this statute and extend its reach to cover other essential Second Amendment-related activities.
SB 176 is now eligible for consideration on the Indiana House floor.
