Ski masks are great for hitting the slopes at this time of year, but they are also the disguise of choice for violent criminals wishing to hide their identity.
But when lawbreakers encounter good guys—and ladies—with guns prepared to defend themselves, these masks quickly prove quite worthless. Look no further than the violent encounter that erupted in Mississippi this week when two masked men allegedly accosted a Jackson homeowner.
Unfortunately for them, the woman in the residence was armed and ready to defend herself.
Two masked suspects allegedly shattered a window and forced their way inside
According to the Jackson Police Department, the call came in about a possible break-in at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Two suspects are believed to have forced their way into an apartment, and they immediately encountered the unexpected.
Though perhaps an armed occupant ready to defend themselves is exactly what to expect in 2026.
Either way, the unidentified woman would not become just another statistic. Investigators believe the suspects first attempted to pry the front door open while covering the Ring camera, and when that failed, they shattered the glass and went inside—big mistake.
Evidence will be presented to the grand jury, though an indictment is unlikely
The female intended victim fired several rounds in her defense.
Fifteen-year-old suspect Kaden Young was pronounced dead at the scene. He attempted to flee after being struck several times but fell before he was able to leave the apartment.
His alleged accomplice ran but was later apprehended. The surviving suspect was charged with murder under the Mississippi statute that holds accomplices criminally liable for acts that are committed in the commission of a felony.
The courageous woman who defended herself has not been charged, and the evidence will be handed over to a grand jury for review. Authorities believe she is likely justified under the state’s Castle Doctrine.
