When anti-gunners promise to strip Second Amendment rights if they are given power, we should believe them.
The Virginia House of Delegates carried out several campaign promises made to gun rights opponents Thursday when it approved a ridiculous package of proposals to clamp down on law-abiding citizens. Last year’s election of Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) and her “tough on guns” mantra made this possible.
Lawmakers want a wave of new restrictions on gun rights
Among the pledges fulfilled were to ban “assault weapons,” prohibit hobby firearms, establish new and oppressive storage laws, and create a wide swath of “sensitive places” where firearms are not allowed.
In other words, “gun-free zones” which are an open invitation to violent criminals.
But first on the agenda was HB 217, which would prohibit ownership of popular semi-automatic weapons and standard-capacity magazines. Virginia residents who violate this ban could be jailed for up to a year and fined up to $2,500.

One state lawmaker, House Minority Leader Terry Kilgore (R), called the package of gun control proposals a “lawyer’s dream.” He predicted trouble for the prohibition in light of the U.S. Supreme Court’s clear rulings on the issue.
Another tactic by the newly empowered anti-2A forces was HB 21, which was explicitly designed to expose the firearms industry to a wave of crippling lawfare. Never mind that such actions are already banned by federal law.
Then there’s HB 40, prohibiting unfinished gun parts, HB 110 targets firearms legally stored in vehicles, and HB 871 would require that firearms be locked away.
There currently is little recourse for Second Amendment supporters except to watch as the new Virginia majority tramples on the right to keep and bear arms. Once done, however, it’s time for powerful legal challenges that are certain to come.
That’s where gun rights organizations will step forward and defend freedoms meant to be enjoyed by all law-abiding Americans.
